Personality

Welcome Breakfast & Murder Free everyday until 10:00 AM

– the sign near the desk at the entrance of the hotel

They are just like the Murder Monkeys. Aggressive, bloodthirsty, sadistic, psychotic, and also outright less sane; in comparison of the other enemies in Dark Deception. They also can easily kill anyone with their pizza cutters, and also can eat anyone with their sharp teeth. Due to being demonic, they still relentlessly act the same dangerous as nevertheless. Once they redeem in their «nightmare» form, they’re shown to be more aggressive, sadistic, and bloodthirsty than ever before.

As revealed through a secret note written by E in the latest enhanced edition of the chapter, they are more sadistic, psychotic, and bloodthirsty than the regular Murder Monkeys.

They also appear to enjoy making meals as much as they like killing people judging by the sign near the entrance.

Final Act

You’re not out yet, mortal.

– Malak, sending Doom Ducky out to chase the player.

After the battle ends, the door will close on the Doom Ducky, and the zone 1 entrance will open. A siren will activate, and Bierce will inform the player that escaping will be more difficult. After exploring far enough into the room, Malak will taunt the player, and the Doom Ducky will burst through a sewer wall to give chase.

All doors in the level are closed, and all but 3 doors are guarded by dancing frenzied Dread Duckies. The player will need to be fast, as the doors open slowly, and can lead to the Doom Ducky catching up to them. Once at the beginning hallway, the chase will stop, and there will be a single frenzied Dread Ducky in front of the player. Once the player walks past the Dread Ducky, it’ll begin chasing the player, as well as the Doom Ducky making one last attempt to kill, but the player then escapes through the portal and ends up in Bierce’s Ballroom once again.

Monsters & Mortals

Dark Deception.

Backstory

Early Life

From what is known of him, Doug grew up a selfish and egotistical man, preserving his own well-being over others. Having received a high-profile job as a criminal defense attorney, Doug obtained a good deal of wealth in his career. He got married to (unknown maiden name) Elise Houser and (sometime before 1988) had a daughter who he named Tammy Houser. The three lived together in the city of Pittsburgh.

Family Life

Doug’s daughter had a history of mental health disorders dating back to 1988, including spontaneous mood swings, panic attacks, and impulsive behavior. As her conditions worsened over time, Doug had to constantly admit her to the Pittsburgh Psychiatric Hospital, where she was diagnosed.

During her assessment, Tammy was examined to have anhedonia, poor mental stability, and bipolar disorder, inherited from her mother. She was convinced that her father resented her, evidenced by signs of self-inflicted scars on her body, as well as extreme agitation when asked about him.

Doug merely saw Tammy for her flaws, and considered her a financial burden. Growing tiresome of his family’s responsibilities, Doug opted to abandon his wife and daughter. He devised a plan to escape them, use his wealth to start a new life, and forget they existed. Doug eventually fled to New York City.

Path To Redemption

Soon after escaping from his family, Doug came to regret his decision. Fully realizing the depravity of his actions, Doug fell into madness, left with a burning reminder of his mistakes. Crippled by remorse, he began to hallucinate his family in public, as well as in his dreams.

Hoping to right his wrongs, Doug devoted himself to a Christian group in hopes of seeking a faithful cause. However, unable to fully embrace religion and spiritual guidance, he resorted to charitable causes and community work. Despite his actions, he felt empty and unfazed, even after taking medication and therapy to forget.

Realizing his fate would inevitably be in darkness, Doug accepted responsibility for his actions and prepared to face his consequences, but not before asking for one last chance to prove himself.

Doug then turned himself into New York City Police Department, and was subsequently arrested under alleged sexual misconduct, sex abuse and sex act charges involving five separate women.

Sometime after, Doug was sent to Bierce’s Ballroom, ready to embrace his fate.

Act II

They’re hiding in the shadows.

– Bierce, after entering zone 2.

Just like Act I, the player must find all the soul shards and avoid the spike traps. Although unlike Act I, the player will have to avoid nine Dread Duckies this time. Bierce also mentions the darkness of the zone, making zone 2 darker than zone 1, which also means that the Dread Duckies can now hide in the shadows. The map layout consists of small corridors and rooms, as well as three large areas containing twelve soul shards each. If the player is being chased by a Dread Ducky, it will only go back into disguised mode when it is not in pursuit or the player is looking in their general direction.

Upon collecting all the soul shards, Malak will give chase following a sound cue. Unlike zone 1, the Dread Duckies in this zone will not disappear after the last shard is collected (meaning they can still kill the player as they are returning to the altar) and will go into a frenzy.

Trivia

  • When Malak kills the player, the words «Come here!» can be heard.
  • The voice actor of Malak, Christopher Corey Smith, also voices over the Gold Watchers, Clown Gremlins, and Goliath Clowns.
  • Originally, Malak was meant to have a slit eye when on the door. This can be seen in the 2015 Alpha demo of the game, though his eye doesn’t move to look at the player.
  • In Glowstick Entertainment’s first Devlog, Malak can be seen chasing the protagonist through a burning Ballroom, leading some to speculate, that he might be the final boss after beating all the levels.
  • As Malak is implied to be a demon, it suggests the realm which houses Bierce’s Ballroom is in some form of purgatory, and Malak’s power cannot harm the ones within as Bierce explains after «Monkey Business«. However, since Malak can move freely, shape-shift, and perform various abilities like teleportation while in the nightmares, one may assume those nightmares are indeed a part of hell, in which Malak can fully unleash his demonic capabilities.
  • Malak may represent Daemonophobia (fear of demons). One may assume that he may even represent Satan.
  • His name means «angel» in Arabic (ملاك), perhaps hinting that he´s not the true villain of the game.
    • It could also allude to him being a fallen angel, thus explaining his demonic persona.
    • Malak is also somewhat of a different spelling for Moloch, the Canaanite god for child-sacrifice, which may also allude to some details from the story of Dark Deception as a whole.
    • It may have been changed to include «mal», which is Latin, meaning «bad» or «evil.»
  • In the second level of the alpha version of the game, there is a poster that reads «Lord Ereshkigal sees all», and a picture of a demon. This likely indicates that Malak’s original name was Ereshkigal.
    • In the 7th Q&A video, Vince confirmed that Malak’s original name was Ereshkigal.
  • Malak is currently the only enemy in the game whose speed is unaffected by difficulty modes.
  • It is confirmed that Malak will be in the Dark Deception crossover games.
  • Malak’s eye decoration in Crazy Carnevil is of his Door Form from the alpha, not the current version.
  • Judging by the upcoming voicelines of Bierce and Malak, it’s speculated that he will make his presence in Bierce’s Ballroom at some point during Chapter 4.
  • As confirmed by Vince Livings in the fourth Q&A video, his biggest inspiration for creating Malak was G-Man from the Half-Life franchise.
  • Glowstick Entertainment posted a new teaser of Malak standing with fire in the background, complete with the quote: «Some men just want to watch the world burn.»

Act I

You’ve gathered half the shards. Try to live long enough to get the rest.

– Bierce, upon collecting all shards in zone 1.

Act I is straight-forward. Collect all the soul shards, all while avoiding six Dread Duckies and short spike traps. The player has to be extremely cautious while collecting soul shards since the Dread Duckies will be blending in with the other lifeless dread duckies thus it is advisable for the player to use the new power to see which of the many duckies are an actual Dread Ducky (They’re highlighted in red). The Dread Duckies will not move from their current location until the player gets in close proximity. upon collecting all soul shards in act I, the Dread Duckies will vanish.

When all of the soul shards in the first zone are collected, the entrance to the central chamber will be unlocked. Upon entering, a violent roar will occur, followed by rumbling of the Doom Ducky with Bierce ignoring it claiming it is nothing to be concerned of. The ring altar, still guarded, can be seen to the left. On the other end of the room is the entrance to zone 2.

Dark Deception

Leveling up is a game mechanic in Dark Deception. The Protagonist levels up after a certain amount of Soul Shards is obtained cumulatively. Soul Shard accumulation is obtained through the completion of levels. The higher the level, the more skill points the player gets; allowing them to use it in the Ring Altar.

Leveling Stats

This is a very rough estimate of the number of Soul Shards needed to level up and the rewards/permanent stats gained from leveling up.

Upon completing the following stages with the maximum attainable Soul Shards will give the player the following amount of Levels:

  • Monkey Business: 389, Level 2 with about 1-2% until Level 3
  • Elementary Evil: 433, Level 6 with about 15% until Level 7
  • Deadly Decadence: 504 Level 9 with about 50% until Level 10

Monsters & Mortals

This article contains information on a subject that isn’t considered canon in Dark Deception franchise.

Malak returns as both a playable monster and portal box hazard in the Monsters & Mortals multiplayer game.

Playable Character

As a Monster of the Power class Malak has the most health in the game and does the most damage but, suffers from big attack cooldown and slow movement speed. In order to make up for his slow movement speed, it is best to use the «Speed Boost» item from the Portal Boxes whenever possible, as well as «Primal Fear», «Speed Drain», and «Banana Peel» to slow down his opponents for a quick and deadly kill. Due to his already high damage output, he has little need for the «Frenzy Mode» item. This makes Malak great at killing players. Malak will attack with his sharp claws (light attack) and demon magic (heavy attack).

His ultimate ability, «Eye of Suffering», when used will make Malak pull out an eye and shoot a red laser at enemies. It will do 40 damage every 0.1 seconds for 5 seconds. Doing a total of 2,000 damage if it never misses. It is best to use this against healthy enemies as this will shred their Hp and kill them in at least 1 second. You have to aim perfectly however, otherwise you will miss and can even waste this if you’re not ready. It’s best to wait a second before using it so your foe will use their item so you know whether to use it or save it until their item wears off such as «Invincibility».

Malak Phantom

You’re my puppet now, mortal.

Malak Phantom, end of the each shard wave in Soul Collection.

Malak Phantom’ is a hostile non-playable character in Monsters & Mortals. Unlike in Dark Deception, Phantom Malak exists independently of Malak’s humanoid form.

In any mode, Phantom Malak can be summoned if a player receives his respective item from a portal box. Once summoned, Phantom Malak will quickly pursue and attack any nearby player for 45 seconds, he will even attack the player who summoned him if they get in his way. Like all bosses, Phantom Malak is immune to all damage, and is unaffected by most portal box items. He deals 50 damage per hit and can outrun every character except Speed types.

In the Soul Collection mode, Malak will be summoned at the end of each wave, quickly pursuing the player with the least amount of soul shards. Upon reaching them, Phantom Malak will instantly kill them, transforming them into a Murder Monkey before disappearing. If the targeted player tries to escape him he will speed up, making them die regardless of how fast or far they are from him.

Behavior

Bierce! Stay out of my room!

You’re both cheating!

– Agatha, after Bierce opens the door.

Throughout the game, Bierce will aid Doug in his quest to collect the Soul Shards to rebuild the Riddle of Heaven. This aid comes in the form of advice, unlocking powers for Doug and a radar to show him where the Soul Shards are. Bierce is rather confident in her abilities and her knowledge, shown in her cocky attitude. She is also able to influence certain events in the Nightmare Realms such as opening the doors after Agatha trapped the player in her room, and providing them with mallet to help them vanquish the Goliath Clowns.
