Traditional Chapter Organisation
Traditional Space Marine Chapter’s Hierarchy
Each Codex-compliant Space Marine Chapter before the era of the Great Rift consisted of 1,000 fighting Space Marines plus support staff which are divided into 10 companies. Each Chapter is led by a Chapter Master. Unlike the Astra Militarum, the Adeptus Astartes has no leadership above the Masters of the individual Chapters. Also unlike many other Imperial military forces, the Astartes has no members to represent the organisation as a High Lord of Terra on the Senatorum Imperialis.
Each of the ten companies of a traditional Chapter is comprised of one hundred Astartes, led by a Captain — a veteran officer of countless wars. A company is organised into ten squads of ten Space Marines, each led by a Sergeant.
Besides the Space Marine fighting brethren, there are many non-combat personnel, fully part of the Chapter but generally not involved directly in combat. These include the Chapter’s hereditary slaves or bonded Chapter Serfs, Astropaths, Navigators, etc.
The following outline defined all Codex-compliant Space Marine Chapters until the Ultima Founding, when the creation of all-Primaris Space Marine Chapters and the heavy reinforcement of existing Space Marine Chapters with Primaris Astartes altered this traditional organisational scheme for the first time in 10,000 Terran years.
Headquarters Staff
Each company of a Codex-compliant Chapter before the Ultima Founding had its own command or headquarters staff, consisting of at least one of the following:
- Captain
- Chaplain
- Librarian
- Techmarine
- Apothecary
Most companies were usually accompanied by a Command Squad of five Veteran Space Marines that included:
- Company Captain
- Company Champion
- Apothecary — For a Space Marine Chapter to have a future it must carefully protect and preserve the organic implants created from gene-seed that turn an Aspirant into a full-fledged Space Marine. An Apothecary serves as a Chapter medic and biological researcher and the overseer of the Chapter’s gene-seed and implantation process for the creation of new Space Marines.
- Ancient — Ancients or Standard Bearers were Veteran Astartes who carried the company banner that displayed the company’s feats and prowess. Captains may also display their personal heraldry in the banner. On rare occasions, the Chapter Banner might be fielded by a particular company’s Command Squad.
Company Structure
The traditional order of battle of the Ultramarines, the archetypal Codex Astartes-compliant Space Marine Chapter, displaying the full composition of all ten companies before the introduction of the Primaris Space Marines during the Plague Wars.
The 1st Company of any traditional Codex-compliant Space Marine Chapter was an elite force made up entirely of Veteran Marines. These skilled warriors are the only members of the Chapter trained in the use of Terminator Armour.
The 2nd to 5th Companies of the Chapter are referred to as Battle Companies and serve as the Chapter’s frontline combatants. Each Battle Company consists of:
- Six 10-man Tactical Squads
- Two 10-man Assault Squads
- Two 10-man Devastator Squads
- Support Vehicles — Predator and Land Raider tanks of different patterns, Assault Bikes, Land Speeders, Rhinos and Razorback armoured transports
- Dreadnoughts — Dreadnoughts are revered Astartes warriors who have been mortally wounded and entombed in a cybernetic Dreadnought sarcophagus which serves as a heavy support combat walker as well as serving a life support fucntion for the injured Space Marine.
The 6th to 9th Companies of a traditional Space Marine Chapter are its Reserve Companies. These are entirely composed of squads of the same combat specialty designation. For instance, the 6th and 7th Companies are usually composed entirely of Tactical Squads, the 8th Company is comprised of Assault Squads, Assault Centurions and Bike Squads, and the 9th Company is comprised of Devastator Squads and Devastator Centurions. Each of the Reserve Companies maintains its own transports, Dreadnoughts, and additional air and armour assets like Stormtalon gunships, Rhino APCs and Predator tanks. The Reserve Companies normally act in support of the Battle Companies and provide a source of replacements for any casualties suffered by the frontline formations.
The 10th Company of a traditional Space Marine Chapter is the Scout Company composed of Space Marine Neophytes who are being exposed to actual combat for the first time. Those Scout Marines who survive this tour of duty are then welcomed into the Chapter as full Initiates and are granted a suit of Power Armour. They are then moved into one of the Reserve Companies to begin climbing the Chapter’s hierarchy — if they survive.
Weapons
Players will be able to access a range of different weapons. The player’s character has four weapon spots, one fixed and three interchangeable. The fixed slot holds a boltgun. Two weapon slots are completely interchangeable can carry a Stalker Pattern Bolter, melta gun, plasma gun, stormbolter, lascannon or vengeance launcher. In the final slot the player carries a pistol, which has infinite ammunition, and melee weapon. Part way through the bolt pistol can be swapped out permanently for the plasma pistol, while the melee weapon, which is initially a combat knife, can be swapped between chainsword, power axe and thunder hammer. Carrying the thunder hammer comes at a penalty with only the pistol and boltgun useable.
At specific points in the game the player can temporarily use heavier weapons, such as the heavy bolter, plasma cannon and autocannon. While carrying these heavy weapons the player cannot attack in melee and is only able to perform a knock back against opponents.
The player is also able to carry up to five frag grenades.

The Eye of Terror
Within the confines of the hellish zone of the Galaxy known as the Eye of Terror, the banished Chaos Space Marines, along with their exiled allies and slaves, have created their own Imperium of Chaos. In the most Chaos-saturated region of the galaxy, few in the ten thousand years of their exile have escaped mutation in some form.
Within the Eye, the legions fight among themselves for gene-seed, resources, slaves, or for the greater glory of the Chaos Gods. The legions however are far more driven by their hatred of the Imperium than by internecine rivalry. From the Eye, the forces of Chaos Marines emerge to exact their vengeance upon the Imperium, continuing the Long War they begun ten thousand years ago.
Chaos incursions range from the small scale but brutal raids which can occur anywhere in the galaxy, to the apocalyptic Black Crusades led by the Warmaster of Chaos, Abaddon the Despoiler, when the forces of Chaos in all its forms unite to batter the fortress worlds close to the Eye.

Equipment
Main article: Chaos Space Marine Armoury
Over the millennia the energies that saturate the Eye of Terror have worked their transformative effects on both the living flesh and the inanimate weapons and armour of the Chaos Space Marines. As far as weapons and equipment, the Chaos Legions retain much of their Legiones Astartes heritage. The bolter remains the main weapon even when it has been refigured into a fusion of biological and inorganic parts, or redesigned into strange and baroque forms by the whims of Chaos or the user himself. Although power armour is often unrecognisable as once being Astartes-issue, the suits continue to function the same, and include standard auto-sensory technology, communicators and respirators. Armour has been recoloured and redecorated to show allegiance to the Legion’s Chaos patron.

Recruitment and Training
Main article: Creation of a Space Marine
Recruits are chosen from the best warriors among humanity. Naturally, this makes Feral Worlds prized recruitment grounds, as such harsh and primal conditions produce the best warriors. However, Hive Worlds are considered the ideal source of potential recruits, the populace of the lower levels composed of some of the most murderous scum in the human Imperium. Whole gangs of hive scum are sometimes hunted down and captured for recruitment. Among the most valued traits in a recruit are aggression and psychotic-level killer instinct. Much more rarely, certain Civilised Worlds are also recruited from.
The potential recruit is first subjected to testing, including tissue compatibility tests and psychological screening. Relatively few get past this initial selection process. Those that do pass are termed «neophytes», and the process continues with the surgery, indoctrination, conditioning, and training that will make them Marines.
The surgical process takes a great deal of time. The recruit receives implants, along with chemical- and hypnotherapy, and training necessary for allowing the functioning and development of the implanted organs. The implants transform their bodies and minds and give them inhuman abilities — making them capable of spitting acidic venom, absorbing the memories of the dead by eating their flesh, darkening their skin to protect it from radiation, and operating for long periods without sleep by switching off parts of their brains at a time. After this implantation process and the associated training, the recruit becomes an «initiate».
Intense indoctrination and conditioning strengthens the recruit’s resolve and increases mental capabilities, honing them into dedicated and merciless warriors. After more general training, they join the Chapter as full «brothers».
Scions of the Machine God
The Adeptus Mechanicus prize knowledge above all things, and without a second thought they will shed oceans of blood – both the enemy’s and their own – in their endless crusade for its acquisition. Such is the will of the Omnissiah, and his priests will stop at nothing to see that will done. It is not uncommon for forge worlds to launch vast, interstellar crusades in order to recover some lost repository of scientific knowledge or weapons technology, should such a prize present itself.
An Adeptus Mechanicus army in the field resembles a bizarre and grotesque religious procession. Rank upon rank of cyborg Skitarii march tirelessly into the teeth of rival guns, or ride to battle aboard Skorpius Duneriders, raising binharic hymns to the glory of the Omnissiah as their radium carbines and galvanic rifles howl and crack. You can support your masses of augmetic soldiers with maniples of battle robots – ancient Cybernetica war constructs driven by clattering difference engines – as well as insectoid walking tanks, Kataphron servitors or other lethal war machines.
