Minecraft Guides
Dec value: 116 Hex value: 74
7 Unbreaking
The unbreaking enchantment is one of the most useful enchantments in the game because it can be applied to so many items, and it helps players save their materials that they would end up using on crafting new tools. Depending on the tier, this enchantment can make a player’s tool last much longer and be able to mine more without the tool breaking.
There are many reasons players would need a more durable tool. The unbreaking enchantment will ensure that a player can mine or dig for a long time without their tool ever breaking. Loggers and miners absolutely love this Minecraft enchantment, and it’s easy to see why. New Minecraft players need to make sure to craft an unbreaking pickaxe as soon as possible.
The best Minecraft enchantments
There is a wide range of Minecraft enchantments, each with different levels of effectiveness. It can take a lot of time to craft your perfect set up, but it’s well worth it if you’re patient enough. Here are the ones to look out for:

Minecraft best enchantments
What are the best enchantments to use in Minecraft? While preference plays a huge part there are a few enchantments that no player should be without.
Mending is the most useful enchantment, especially for tools and weapons you’re likely to use a lot. Wear and tear costs a lot of resources the longer you play in Minecraft, with successive repairs increasing in cost. Mending repairs your equipped weapon by picking up XP bubbles. So, every time you slay one of the countless Minecraft mobs the XP bubbles that pop out will immediately repair the weapon you just used. Just switch to your pickaxe before hoovering up the XP and you can keep your diamond pickaxe in good condition.
In a similar vein, Unbreaking increases your item’s durability, meaning you can spend longer using it before having to go on a mender bender.
For weapons it’s generally just easier to use an enchantment like maxed out Sharpness or Power than a specialist enchantment like Smite or Impaling as these will buff your overall power and you won’t need to carry around several swords. For tools you’ll want Mending and Unbreaking, but also Efficiency and Fortune.
Finally, when it comes to the best Minecraft armor enchantments, you always want Feather Falling on your boots to reduce fall damage and maxed out Protection on all your armor pieces.

Basics
To start enchanting your weapons you first need an enchantment table, which can be crafted with a book, 2 diamonds and 4 pieces of obsidian.
Once you’ve made and placed your enchantment table, simply right click it to open the enchantment interface and drag your item into the empty grid slot. You will then see 3 different enchantments with each a level of their own. The foreign language (standard galactic alphabet) they’re written in can be translated, but the translation has nothing to do with the actual enchantments.
If you wish to get an enchantment of a different level, you can simply take your item out of the grid and place it back in again, repeat untill you get your prefered enchantment level. The highest enchantment level you can get without any bookshelves around it is 5, but this mechanic is explained in more detail below.
After choosing your enchantment, your item will glow and it now has 1 or several bonuses on them. You’ve also lost a number of experience levels equal to the level of the enchantment. The only way to get rid of the enchantment is by repairing the item, which requires you to place 2 of the same items in a diagonal line on a crafting grid. Repairing an item will always undo the enchantment, so there’s no way to keep your enchantment forever.
Bookshelf placement[]
Nearby bookshelves raise the available enchantment levels; without any bookshelves, the experience level requirement never exceeds 8.
In order to have an effect, a bookshelf must be placed exactly 2 blocks, laterally, off the enchanting table and be on the same level or one block height above the table, and the 2-high space between the bookshelf and table must be air (even a torch, snow cover or carpet blocks the effect), where «between» is as shown in the following diagrams (the white spaces are air, and the do not matter):
Like this from the top: |

The glyph particles, which fly from bookshelves, follow different rules and may appear even if the bookshelves are not enhancing the table.
There are many possible bookshelf arrangements that can reach the enchantment limit. A simple method is to surround the enchanting table with a 1-block high square of bookshelves with an empty space anywhere on the perimeter:
Another alternative that is now available is to build a ‘library corner’ where each bookshelf is two blocks high, as in the plan below. This arrangement gives space for 16 shelves, which is one more than needed, so if the corner bookshelf column cannot be seen, removing one of the two bookshelves in that does not have any effect, either technically or visually.
Selecting an enchantment level
As enchantments offered depend on the enchantment level and the enchantment level depends on the number of active bookshelves, an easy way to change the enchantments offered is to disable bookshelves by placing torches between them and the enchanting table. That way one can still have the entire ‘ring’ of bookshelves around the table but get lower-level enchantments. Breaking the torches restores the effect of the bookshelves.
With the layout shown here, enchantments with any number of bookshelves from 0 to 15 may be easily obtained:

Weapons[]
Sword
- Unbreaking III
- Mending
- Sharpness V (for general use) or Smite V (for fighting , such as wither and wither skeleton farms) or Bane of Arthropods V (not recommended, unless for a spider farm)
- Sweeping Edge III [Java Edition only](Deals more damage to multiple mobs while standing still, useful for XP farms, though you may accidentally hit your pets if they’re too close)
- Looting III (must-have for manual mob farms)
- Fire Aspect II (Optional. Makes endermen a hassle to fight, since they teleport everywhere while on fire; hostile mobs that are set on fire set you on fire on melee attacks; cooks food dropped by cows, pigs, hoglins, sheep, chickens, rabbits, cod, and salmon)
- Knockback II (Optional. Can make drowneds and skeletons a hassle to fight; useful against creepers)
Axe
- Unbreaking III
- Mending
- Efficiency V
- Sharpness V or Smite V (allows 1-hit killing of most undead mobs) or Bane of Arthropods V (allows 1-hit killing of arthropods) [note that axes are more useful for combat on Java Edition]
- Silk Touch (useful for melons, bookshelves and beehives) or Fortune III (only slightly useful for melons)
Bow
- Infinity or Mending
- Power V
- Unbreaking III
- Flame
- Punch II (Optional)
Infinity means without Unbreaking you need 383 less arrows. With Unbreaking I / II / III you need on average 767/1151/1535 less arrows (1536=24 stacks). Mending means your bow will never break if you continually gain enough experience, which will likely happen. If you have an enchanting setup and a lot of iron for anvils, infinity is better, unless you can obtain large quantities of arrows with ease. Another exception would be if you got a powerful bow early game, for example from fishing. Mending would be better because you won’t have a lot of iron or an enchanting table early on.
There are multiple enchantment orders with the same in . At the same total costs in levels the cost in XP can still be different. For example two steps costing 2 and 4 levels require more XP than two steps costing 3 levels each. The optimal enchantment orders is with a cost of 5 + 3 + 2 + 9 + 10 = 29 levels.
Crossbow
- Quick Charge III
- Multishot or Piercing IV *
- Unbreaking III
- Mending
Crossbows can only receive up to Quick Charge II through an enchanting table. Quick Charge III must be obtained via other means: either by combining two crossbows in an anvil, using enchanted books, or via mob drops.
You are more likely to hit another mob with Multishot or the same one when its a larger mob, but the chance that you hit something else unintentionally increases with both enchantments (a villager to make an iron golem angry or a zombified piglin or bees). Piercing allows reusing arrows which hit a mob, so it almost substitutes Infinity, and it can be useful for achieving certain advancements[JE only] or killing at spawners. Piercing is usually better because you use less arrows, and with multishot, you can only see where one arrow will land, not all three. Also, Piercing uses 1 durability per shot, while Multishot uses 3; more precious ammunition such as can also be retrieved after use, which is a benefit that Infinity doesn’t have.
Trident
- Mending (must-have, as tridents can otherwise only be repaired with other tridents)
- Unbreaking III
- Loyalty III and Channeling or only Riptide III *
- Impaling V (useful for fighting guardians, but not drowneds[JE only], or underwater combat in general[BE only])
Loyalty can be useful for fighting mobs in any weather conditions. Loyalty will make your trident come to you automatically, unless you throw it into the void[Java Edition only].
Riptide is useful for fast transportation in certain weather conditions or underwater, it can also be used as a reliable substitute of firework rockets for elytra as long as there is a water source nearby, or it is raining.
Channeling makes a lightning strike on any mobs you attack with your trident (only works under thunderstorms). This can be used to turn villagers into witches, pigs into zombified piglins, red mooshrooms into brown mooshrooms, and creepers into charged creepers. A charged creeper’s explosion will cause a nearby mob to drop its head (such as zombies, skeletons, and other creepers) so this enchantment is useful for farming mob heads. But beware of that as charged creepers’ explosions are 50% more powerful than an explosion of TNT.
The best enchantments in Minecraft
There are many Minecraft enchantments to discover, and you should experiment with combinations that work for you and your playstyle. To get you started, we’ve picked out some of the best ones to look out for and listed them here.
Mending (max. Rank 1)
Best applied to: Weapons or resource gathering tools that you frequently use.Effect: You’ll have noticed that tools and weapons in Minecraft will wear down and break with repeated use. This enchantment allows an item to use any experience gained to repair itself so whenever you see those little green orbs that are produced from either killing monsters or mining resources, they will replenish the durability of the enchanted item.
Unbreaking (max. Rank 3)
Best applied to: Weapons, armor, or resource gathering tools that you frequently use.Effect: Similar to Mending, Unbreaking will increase the durability of the item it is applied to. You’ll still need to repair it manually but it should take a lot longer to wear down.
Fortune (max. Rank 3)
Best applied to: Pickaxe, shovel, or axe.Effect: This enchantment will increase the number of resources that can be collected from a single block quite significantly. It’s especially useful for gathering rarer materials such as diamonds or even Lapis Lazuli (which you’ll need plenty of for all of your enchantments!).
Looting (max. Rank 3)
Best applied to: Sword.Effect: This one is similar to the Fortune enchantment, except that it increases the loot that an enemy drops when killed. It should be noted that this doesn’t increase the experience gained.
Sharpness (max. Rank 5)
Best applied to: Sword or axe.Effect: The Sharpness enchantment increases the melee damage of a weapon. There are specialised enchantments that will increase your damage against certain monster-types but Sharpness will make a good all-round damage boost against anything you encounter.
Power (max. Rank 5)
Best applied to: Bow.Effect: The Power enchantment will increase your arrow damage by a significant amount. This is handy if you prefer to take out monsters at range.
Protection (max. Rank 4)
Best applied to: Armor.Effect: As the name suggests, the Protection enchantment will increase the damage reduction on any piece of armor. There are specialised enchantments that will protect against specific damage types but generally, Protection is the better choice if you don’t have the resources for multiple armor sets.
Efficiency (max. Rank 5)
Best applied to: Pickaxe, shovel, axe.Effect: The Efficiency enchantment increases the gathering speed of the tool it is applied to. This is handy if you want to save time but will only work when the tool is being used to gather the correct resource. Using a pickaxe to gather wood, for example, won’t see any speed benefit.

That’s it for our Minecraft enchantments guide. Hopefully, you feel wiser, stronger, and ready to face Mojang’s perilous world. Failing that, at least you know a bit more than you did previously. Crafting the perfect items takes a lot of time and a bit of luck, but it’s certainly worth the effort.
