Background[]

The Special Tactics and Reconnaissance branch was founded in 693 CE, shortly before the Krogan Rebellions began, at a time when the Council was uneasy about the unchecked expansion of the krogan into Citadel space. The Spectres were chosen from the finest salarian Special Tasks Group operatives and asari huntresses, intended to function partly in an observational capacity, but also as the Council’s first line of defense.

When the krogan finally turned against the Citadel, the Spectres were ready for them, using guerrilla tactics such as computer viruses and devastating sabotage to slow the krogan down before the turians joined the conflict. For years the activities of the Spectres were a Council secret, but their role was made public after the Krogan Rebellions were over.

All records of the Spectres are sealed and only granted access with permission of the Council. It is not even clear how many there are: Alliance intelligence estimates that there are fewer than a hundred. Each Spectre is hand-picked by the Council after proving that they are an individual of exceptional ability and self-reliance.

In theory Spectres can be chosen from any race; in practice they are usually selected from the Council races. Having a Spectre chosen from their kind often raises a particular species’ profile on the Citadel. Many alien races have been part of the Citadel for centuries without a Spectre being chosen from their ranks.

Ambassador Anita Goyle and later her successor Donnel Udina were both desperate to get a human into the Spectres, as this would be the first step toward humanity gaining a seat on the Council. The first possible candidate was David Anderson, but his observer, Saren Arterius, sabotaged the evaluation, falsifying his report to make Anderson look responsible for casualties caused by Saren’s own ruthless tactics during the mission. After Saren submitted his report, the Council refused Anderson entry into the Spectres.

The second candidate is Commander Shepard, whose outing of Saren as a renegade Spectre results in their induction into the Spectre ranks. This event happens before humanity attains its Council seat following Saren’s attack on the Citadel a short while later.

In the last thousand years only two people have turned down an offer to become a Spectre, both of whom were asari matriarchs. Following Shepard’s death and subsequent resurrection in 2185, the Commander can choose to become the third by declining to accept when offered reinstatement.

Trivia[]

The rachni resemble several insectoid alien races in various science fiction series, but most closely resemble the Arachnids from Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. Similarly, the rachni workers somewhat resemble the beetle shaped diggers from the Starship Troopers movie. The name ‘rachni’ even forms part of the name ‘Arachnids’, the scientist Flores may also be a reference to Private Dizzy Flores. The story of nearly complete extinction of a telepathic, sentient insectoid race and then a single Queen egg surviving to resurrect the race may be inspired by the Formics in Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and subsequent sequel novels.

«Songs» commonly associated with rachni can be heard near the wreckage where the Asari Writings are found on Altahe, at the abandoned mining camp on Nepmos, at the abandoned camp on Nodacrux, near the landing zone on Rayingri, near the downed recon probe on Eletania, on the hill near the crashed CCCP Luna 23 on Luna (where it should be impossible for any rachni to be present), and on the hill to the west of the thresher maw and crashed probe on Xawin. It is unknown, however, whether any specific connection to the rachni is implied by the presence of these sounds. It is possible that BioWare used the same audio-library that Epic Games used to create Unreal 2: The Awakening, in which the same sound can be heard perfectly on the planet Severnaya.

Development[]

The developers have acknowledged having trouble keeping rumors of the remaster under wraps during its official announcement on N7 Day, November 7, 2020.

Although the Legendary Edition was supposed to include everything from the trilogy, certain parts like Pinnacle Station and Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer had to be cut. The development team tried to contact Demiurge Studios for their source files for Pinnacle Station, but the code backups that were turned over were corrupted. Rebuilding it from scratch would have taken another six months, and game director Mac Walters described the decision to cut it as «heartbreaking.»

Multiplayer was cut due to logistical challenges in overhauling its systems for modern sensibilities, and focusing on it would have eaten into the singleplayer remaster’s limited development time. Instead, the game has been rebalanced, and sections of Mass Effect 3 that would have required multiplayer to tie into the story experience have been redistributed.

Legendary Edition aims for a faithful retelling of the trilogy’s story and doesn’t provide extra content, romances or otherwise. BioWare considered resurrecting previously cut content, but much of it was not in a readily available state and would have required rebuilding any missing linkages from scratch, diverting from the effort to remastering the trilogy.

The remaster uses Unreal Engine 3, the same engine behind the original trilogy. Several assets like the Kismet scripting language used in the trilogy have no equivalent in Unreal Engine 3’s successor Unreal Engine 4, which also means everything else would have to be redone from scratch. Consulting with Epic, the engines’ creator, BioWare determined that bringing the trilogy to UE4 would have fundamentally changed how it felt and how it played. BioWare instead opted to push the limits of UE3, such as creating real-time dynamic reflections by sticking another camera in every scene and rendering each one twice.

Substantial work went into bringing the first Mass Effect closer in line to the aesthetics of the later two games. It was more of an RPG than the shooters the latter two games became, so BioWare aimed to bring the improvements they’ve made to various systems in 2 and 3 back into the first game.

Strange camera placements in the original trilogy have been rectified in Legendary Edition. Shepard’s sitting model was designed for males, which translates to an awkward look on skirted female Shepards, so the camera angle on the latter has been raised. Lingering shots of Miranda Lawson’s butt are also slated to be corrected.

Owing to the existence of numerous mods for the trilogy, Walters revealed ongoing discussions with certain people in the modding community regarding how the remaster would impact their mods and how to better integrate them into the games going forward.

Development is currently ongoing to determine if custom Shepard faces from the original trilogy can be imported into the Legendary Edition. The first Mass Effect game gained a face code importer, but due to several improvements and additions to the character creator some codes are working better than others.

The inclusion of photo mode is attributed to Technical Design Director Brenon Holmes’ efforts.

The story is the «epic conclusion» to the story started in Mass Effect and continued in Mass Effect 2, as well as the conclusion of Commander Shepard’s story. The player’s choices in the previous games were expected to have a much more significant impact on the plot than the choices in Mass Effect had on Mass Effect 2. As Mass Effect 3 is the end of the trilogy, the developers were not constrained by the necessity of allowing the story to diverge, yet also continue into the next chapter. This was to result in a story that diverges into wildly different conclusions based on the player’s actions in the first two chapters.

Throughout Mass Effect 3, Commander Shepard will be bringing the civilisations of the galaxy together as allies to take back Earth and repel the Reaper invasion. The player’s choices throughout not only Mass Effect 3, but the entire trilogy, will affect the fate of these civilisations and the endings the player can receive.

While some squad members are required, and core to the story, some are optional and others are only available for a single mission. The Normandy SR-2 returns in Mass Effect 3. It has been claimed by the Systems Alliance, which has taken the ship apart, studied it, and then rebuilt it with new technologies and new areas.

Максимальный уровень персонажа в Mass Effect 3 — 60. При импорте персонажа из Mass Effect 2 его уровень, характер и навыки сохранятся.

Исследования

Исследования облегчены по сравнению со второй частью. Теперь необходимо сканировать планеты из космоса, и если на планете находится какой-нибудь артефакт, то просто надо запустить зонд с орбиты. Ресурсов, как во второй части, уже нет.

Kinect

Mass Effect 3 поддерживает контроллер Kinect для Xbox 360. С помощью него игрок сможет отдавать голосовые команды (в англоязычной версии игры) своим напарникам и произносить фразы из диалогов.

Стили игры

В Mass Effect 3 можно будет выбрать три стиля игры: Ролевой — традиционный стиль Mass Effect, Действие — стиль, делающий упор на сражения, а ответы в диалогах будут выбираться автоматически (Герой и Отступник будут чередоваться), История — упрощённые сражения для тех, кто хочет сосредоточиться на ролевой составляющей Mass Effect.

Война Первого контакта[]

Первый контакт людей с внеземной расой состоялся в 2157 году. В те времена Альянс позволял исследовательским кораблям активировать любые найденные ретрансляторы. Расы, входящие в Совет, считают такие действия опасными и безответственными. Когда турианский патруль обнаружил людей, пытающихся активировать ретранслятор 314, турианцы атаковали. Единственный уцелевший корабль людей отступил, ища убежища в колонии Шаньси.

Турианцы последовали за ним, в короткий срок уничтожив местные силы и захватив Шаньси. Она стала первой и единственной планетой людей, захваченной расой пришельцев. Турианцы посчитали группу уничтоженных кораблей основной оборонительной силой людей. Они оказались не готовы к прибытию Второго флота под командованием адмирала Кастани Дрешера, который, проведя контрнаступление, выбил силы турианцев с планеты.

Турианцы начали готовиться к полномасштабной войне, чем привлекли к себе внимание остальных обитателей Галактики. Совет вмешался, объявив перемирие и заставил турианцев выплатить Альянсу компенсации

К счастью для обеих сторон, война Первого контакта закончилась путём дипломатических переговоров.

Система диалогов[]

Все диалоги в игре Mass Effect осуществляются через диалоговый круг, в котором игрок может выбрать нужную реплику. Это позволяет совершенствовать персонажа, придерживаясь определённой линии, и влиять на сюжет игры. Реплики в левой части диалогового круга ведут к развитию беседы, в правой – к завершению. В верхней части, как правило,расположены реплики, соответствующие пути Героя. При их выборе персонаж действует отзывчиво и бескорыстно. В нижней части обычно находятся реплики, ведущие по пути Отступника. Они более резкие и агрессивные.

Интерактивные диалоги игры позволят вам выразить личность своего персонажа и создать собственную историю. Если вы будете распределять очки умений на навыки Обаяние и/или Устрашение, в левой части диалогового круга появятся новые реплики, которые помогут вам быстрее добиться своей цели. Синие реплики Героя появляются благодаря развитию навыка Обаяние, а красные реплики Отступника – благодаря развитию навыка Устрашение.

Когда во время диалога вы выбираете реплики, персонаж высказывается так, как ему подсказывают ваш выбор и сложившаяся ситуация. Чтобы прервать реплику, нажмите клавишу «Пробел».

Mechanics[]

Powers in Mass Effect 2 are divided into four categories: biotic, combat, tech, and newly introduced ammo powers that can modify weapon damage (for more on ammo powers, see the Weapons page). The category a power belongs to will determine which upgrades apply to it.

In Mass Effect 2, many powers now do large amounts of damage and can be used as an ammo-saving alternative to weapons for defeating enemies even on higher difficulties. Most damage powers are capable of doing bonus damage against various types of enemy protection (i.e. shields, barriers, armor, and health). Biotic powers will generally do extra damage when used against biotic barriers, while tech powers will generally do extra damage against shields. There are also many powers useful for other effects on enemies besides pure damage, but in most cases enemy defense layers must be neutralized before these effects can apply. For example, as in Mass Effect, many biotic powers are capable of levitating enemies or flinging them around the battlefield, but in Mass Effect 2 enemy protections such as shields must be destroyed before they are vulnerable to these effects.

Most powers in Mass Effect 2 now automatically lock on to enemies and either hit home instantly or fire seeking projectiles some of which are capable of arcing around cover. Enemies cannot evade powers unless they move into cover, something else blocks the power, or they have a higher than average movement speed. Powers used by squadmates almost never fire actual projectiles and instead impact targets instantly.

Each power, with the exception of Unity, has 4 ranks. When the player levels up, each character is awarded ‘squad points’ that can be used to unlock each rank. Each rank costs the same number of points as its rank. Unlocking all 4 ranks requires a total of 10 points. Many powers will gain additional effects at higher ranks. Upon unlocking rank 4 of a power, the player will need to choose between two powerful final evolutions of the power.

PS3 version[]

The PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 was developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The PlayStation 3 version uses a variation of the game engine being developed for Mass Effect 3. The game was released on January 18, 2011 in North and South America, on January 21, 2011 in Europe, and January 27 in Australia and New Zealand.

The full version of the game is also available for download through the PlayStation Network.

Copies of the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 include the following:

PS3 downloadable content

All other downloadable content for Mass Effect 2 was made available for PlayStation 3 owners to purchase. In addition, several «exclusive» free and paid DLC packs were released. These DLC packs contain Mass Effect 2 content that Xbox 360 and PC owners already have or had access to, but which PS3 owners are unable to obtain otherwise. These packs include:

  • Terminus Weapon and Armor
  • Recon Operations Pack
  • N7 Complete Arsenal Bundle

Since the original Mass Effect was not initially available on the PlayStation 3, Mass Effect: Genesis, a brief «interactive comic» which gives players the back-story of the Mass Effect universe and allow them to make choices which will affect their playthroughs of Mass Effect 2, was made available for download as part of the Cerberus Network.

Save file corruption

Following the release of the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2, numerous players reported that their save files were being corrupted. This corruption forced a console restart and rendered all Mass Effect 2 save files unplayable.

While a patch to resolve the issue was pending approval by Sony, BioWare’s Chris Priestly suggested that players could avoid the save file corruption by shutting down and restarting the game every few hours, before the corruption had a chance to occur. The patch was released on February 21, 2011 and the save file corruption problem was repaired.
