Depiction in the series

Season four

The Pony of Shadows is first mentioned in a ghost story told by Applejack in the season four episode Castle Mane-ia. According to Applejack, when Nightmare Moon was banished to the moon, traces of her dark magic stayed behind. When night falls on the Castle of the Two Sisters, that dark magic takes the form of the Pony of Shadows.

Season seven

The Pony of Shadows in a storybook.

In the season seven finale Shadow Play — Part 1, the Pony of Shadows is revealed to be a real figure from Equestrian history. As recorded in the lost journal of Star Swirl the Bearded, the Pony of Shadows was originally a normal pony who brought the Pillars of Old Equestria together to save the land from a great evil. However, the pony soon became jealous of the Pillars’ power and glory, and he stole artifacts from them in a quest for power, resulting in his exile. The resentful pony thus turned to darkness for revenge and transformed into the Pony of Shadows. In order to stop him, the Pillars sealed him in along with themselves. A thousand years later, Twilight Sparkle and her friends inadvertently release the Pony of Shadows from limbo when they free the Pillars.

In Part 2, the Pony of Shadows—weak from his time in captivity—escapes to regain his strength from the darkest corners of Equestria. The Pillars eventually reveal the beast’s true identity as their former friend Stygian, a young scholar who gathered them all together to defend the realm and worked alongside them as a battle strategist until he stole their artifacts and transformed into a wicked creature of darkness.

Star Swirl makes amends with Stygian.

The Mane Six and Pillars eventually track down the Pony of Shadows to the . Before the ponies can banish him to limbo again, Twilight and Starlight Glimmer reach out to the real Stygian inside the beast’s body. Stygian reveals that he never wanted to steal from the Pillars; he wanted to make copies of their artifacts so he could fight alongside them in battle. The Pillars realize their grave mistake, and together with the Mane Six, they free Stygian from the darkness and banish the darkness to limbo with the Elements of Harmony. Star Swirl apologizes to Stygian for letting pride cloud his judgment, and Stygian remains in the present era with the Pillars.

Season eight

In season eight, Star Swirl alludes to Stygian in Friendship University, citing the misunderstanding between them as reason for Twilight to give Flim and Flam the benefit of the doubt. In A Rockhoof and a Hard Place, Stygian is mentioned as having become a best-selling author, writing at least three stories about his past experiences.

Season nine

In season nine, the Pony of Shadows is mentioned in The Beginning of the End — Part 1 as one of the challenges Twilight and her friends have overcome.

In The Last Problem, Stygian attends Twilight Sparkle’s coronation ceremony. He also briefly appears in Twilight’s group shot during The Magic of Friendship Grows.

Zecora is a zebra and explicitly stated not to be a pony – despite being the only other creature to feature a cutie mark.

In The Journal of the Two Sisters, young Luna and a manticore named Melvin encounter other zebras in a dark part of the Everfree Forest. Like Zecora, they have cutie marks and all speak in rhyme. Rainbow Dash and the Daring Do Double Dare also features a villainous male zebra named Braze. features Zecora’s childhood friend, a female zebra named .

Donkeys and mules

Cranky Doodle Donkey is a donkey as his name implies; Matilda is another donkey.

A resident Ponyville mule is used as a visual gag in Applebuck Season, Hurricane Fluttershy, and One Bad Apple; Mulia Mild is another mule. One of the Diamond Dogs refers to Rarity as a «mule» in A Dog and Pony Show, and she acts deeply upset about it.

Draconequus

The draconequus Discord is introduced in The Return of Harmony and «has the head of a pony and a body made up of all sorts of things», says Cheerilee in that episode.

Breezies

The Breezies are tiny, magical fairy-like creatures that have distinct pony attributes and body shapes, whilst also having large, clear wings and antennae. In the third generation of the My Little Pony toy line, Breezies were originally considered an official pony type, as previous generation Breezies had cutie marks, whilst in contrast the fourth generation Breezies are completely blank-flanked.

Abada

Abada are equine-like creatures from the zebra country of . They are similar to unicorns, except they have two curved horns (one in front that’s shorter than the other), thin and slightly angular bodies, backswept ears, and thin tails. Two of Zecora’s childhood friends are abada named and .

In African mythology, the abada is an animal similar to a unicorn that has two crooked horns instead of a unicorn’s single straight horn.

Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake are introduced in the episode Baby Cakes. The main six are shocked to learn that Pound Cake is a Pegasus while Pumpkin Cake is a unicorn, though Mr. Cake explains it away as due to distant familial relations in both his and Mrs. Cake’s lineages. The twins appear in multiple subsequent episodes and other media.

In Baby Cakes, Mr. Cake mentions his great-great-great-great grandfather, a unicorn, and Mrs. Cake’s great aunt’s second cousin twice removed, a Pegasus.

Development and design

Snips is an excitable and goofy pony, often entering a fit of eager jumping at the slightest inclination. He is an unusually short and round pony, much like Truffle, and is possibly the smallest unicorn in all of Ponyville, other than babies such as Pumpkin Cake. He is characterized by his small eyes, buck teeth, high and scratchy voice, short light brown mane and tail, and large brown eyebrows. These features grant him a unique appearance in comparison to the other residents of Ponyville. His irises are usually not visible outside of My Little Pony: Pony Life, similarly to those of Snails, but they are sometimes visible in the IDW comics, varying between brown on ‘s page 12 and dark blue on ‘s Hot Topic RE cover.

His cutie mark, a pair of scissors, is explained by him in the IDW comics’ story Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair — Part Deux «If You Only Have a Hammer, You See Every Problem as a Nail» as meaning that he is «excellent at cutting all things».

Both Snips, as well as partner-in-crime Snails, are named after the traditional nursery rhyme What Are Little Boys Made Of. A version of the verse goes:

What are little boys made of?

Snips and snails and puppy dogs’ tails.

That’s what little boys are made of.

According to Lauren Faust, originally Snips and Snails’ sizes were reversed; Snips was the bigger one and Snails was the smaller one. According to Jim Miller on July 13, 2015, Claude and Snips aren’t father and son.

↑ In Latin America (excluding Brazil), there are five feeds: Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and LATAM (rest of Latin America). Each one has an exclusive schedule.
Never aired any new episodes beyond season one after episode 25 «Party of One» (the season finale never aired) debuted in April 2012. Continued broadcasting the season one episodes until the show was eventually dropped from rotation in March 2014 to free up its time-slot in favor of other shows that debuted on the channel.
The show is heavily edited on Spacetoon due to the company’s extreme censorship policies based on religious and political reasons. Consequently, a few episodes deliberately did not air on the channel at all.
Currently only airs season one episodes since February 2017 — the first channel in the region to air the episodes since Cartoon Network Arabic dropped them from rotation in March 2014.

As of February 2017, all episodes from season two to the present, in addition to all Equestria Girls films, were aired in both English and Arabic languages on e-Junior, as the channel supports two audio tracks. Baby Flurry Heart’s Heartfelt Scrapbook

Tank appears in episode 3 of Baby Flurry Heart’s Heartfelt Scrapbook, «All About Alicorns».

In a story titled «Vlieglessen voor Tank» («Flying Lessons for Tank»), Rainbow Dash gives Tank flying lessons. The story takes place immediately after the events of May the Best Pet Win!

Tank appears as Rainbow Dash’s pet in Pet Project’s earlier-released issue comic adaptation.

TANK the tortoise goes at his own pace and doesn’t apologize for doing things his own way. He prefers a relaxing atmosphere when he’s not competing for attention. If only Rainbow Dash,[sic] would let him hibernate!
